Golf tourney benefits Brock student athletes
New scholarship established for curlers and golfers at university
Upwards of 140 golfers got into the swing of fundraising by participating in a tournament in support of
Brock University.
But many more than that will benefit from the $75,000 raised in the 16th annual President’s Golf Classic held at St. Catharines Golf and Country Club. Founded by former university president David Atkinson and the late David S. Howes, the tournament raises funds that help support student athletes at Brock.
“With countless hours spent studying, attending classes, practising, travelling, playing and working out, there truly isn’t enough time to work a job,” said Clint Windsor, a goaltender on the men’s hockey team team and Brock’s male athlete of the year. “Receiving a President’s Golf Classic scholarship relieves a lot of stress from athletes like myself.
“This scholarship is very important as it allows us to put our focus on two main things: Our school work and our sport.”
St. Catharines Golf and Country Club president John F.T. Scott showed the club’s support by presenting a cheque to establish a scholarship for student athletes playing on the university’s curling or golf team.
Brock athletic director Neil Lumsden said support from events, such as the President’s Golf Classic, as well as partnerships with organizations help the school build championship programs.
“These crucial funds allow us to continue to attract and recruit some of the best student athletes from our own backyard and from across Canada and the world.”
Rankin Construction was the presenting sponsor for the second year in a row.
