A 3-on-3 charity ball hockey tournament in Grimsby is contributing to the Humboldt Broncos Memorial Fund.

We Play For Humboldt is a one-day ball hockey tournament in honour of the Broncos on Saturday at the outdoor rink at Peach King Arena.

The tournament is made up of eight teams of 10 players. There will be prizes, raffles and food trucks.

Cost is $300 per team and all proceeds go directly to the Humboldt Broncos Memorial Fund.

The idea was started by Cat Dawson and Charles Young.

“My dad was born and raised in Humboldt, Saskatchewan, so having family out there and go there as a kid are memories I’ll forever have,” said Dawson. “Charles and I wanted to do more than just donate money to the cause.”

The duo approached the Town of Grimsby Recreation and Leisure department and were given permission to use the outdoor rink.

Next, they created a Facebook page for the tournament.

“The response was overwhelming, we filled up quite quickly,” said Dawson. “Then I thought, ‘Hey the splash pad is right there, so let’s make it a day for the whole family.’

“We have kids’ entertainment coming and face-painting, food trucks and raffles. When we filled up so quick, I thought we should see if we can get community support.”

Dawson reached out to Paul Stafford at Big Stick Jerseys in Toronto who donated team jerseys so each entry will have its own team colours and jersey with “We Play for Humboldt” on the front and numbers on the back.

The raffle consists of a fourburner barbecue, a 40-inch smart television and a $100 gift card to a local restaurant of your choice.

“This tragedy in Humboldt affected not only people in Saskatchewan, but the whole country of Canada,” said Dawson. “Charles and I are working every day by reaching out to local businesses to see about possible support for the tournament.”

Anyone interested in donating, volunteering or purchasing raffle tickets can contact Dawson at 289-527-3435 or email 3on3forhumboldt@gmail.com.
