Spoons duo playing acoustic show in Falls

- JOHN LAW

The couple behind classic Canadian new wave band Spoons will play an acoustic show in Niagara Falls Saturday to benefit the Falls View Hose Brigade.

Singer/guitarist Gordon Deppe and singer/bassist Sandy Horne will play the club at 5786 Dunn St. starting at 8 p.m. Funds will help the volunteer service club’s efforts to support minor league sports teams, deliver Christmas baskets and provide donations to other agencies in the city.

“When I spoke with Gordon Deppe over the phone and pitched him the idea of the benefit show, there was no hesitation on his part,” says organizer and club member Chris Dabrowski. “They’re looking forward to supporting the club and families across Niagara.”

The band, which played Scotiabank Convention Centre in December with Burton Cummings, was formed 39 years ago in Burlington and had their first album (1981’s “Stick Figure Neighbourhood”) produced by Daniel Lanois. Their breakthrough came the following year with the album “Arias & Symphonies” and its singles “Nova Heart” and “Smiling in Winter.”

The band was soon opening for The Police and Simple Minds, and scored another Canadian hit with “Old Emotions” in 1983. Two of their most familiar songs followed in 1984 — “Romantic Traffic” and “Tell No Lies.”

The past 10 years has seen the band extensively touring Canada again. The band’s last album was 2011’s “Static in Transmission.”

“This is a rare opportunity for fans of Spoons to hear songs and stories from the band in a very intimate setting,” says Dabrowski.

Tickets are $10, available at the door. Doors open at 8 p.m.
