Sendzik running for re-election

-

St. Catharines Mayor Walter Sendzik has announced his intention to run for re-election.

In a video posted to his Twitter account Tuesday, Sendzik said he was filing his nomination papers with the city clerk.

“It has been an honour and privilege to represent St. Catharines over the past four years,” Sendzik said in the video. “I hope to see you on the campaign trail.”

He said more information about his campaign will be coming in the next few weeks.

Sendzik, elected as mayor in 2014 after working as the head of Greater Niagara Chamber of Commerce, is the second person to declare they are running for the mayor of the Garden City.

In May, Johnny Tischler, owner of Sonic Tattoo in St. Catharines, filed his papers to run for mayor. In an interview with The Standard, he said the city needs change brought by the “common

person.”

There are only a handful of other people, including some currently serving city councillors, who have filed their papers to run in the next election.

People interested in running for municipal office — that includes for councillors at Niagara cities and towns, school board posts and regional council — have until July 27 at 2 p.m. to file their nomination papers.

Voters go to the polls on Oct.

22.

Information about how to become a candidate and information about those who are already registered to run, can be found at the City of St. Catharines website at https://bit.ly/2Fp0KIp.
