Airsoft gun prompts concern for school safety

- RACHEL EMMANUEL

Police were called to Connaught Public School in St. Catharines Wednesday after a male teen was seen walking near the area with what appeared to be a firearm.

The object was later determined to be an airsoft gun, said Niagara Regional Police Const. Phil Gavin.

Albert Welke, a mechanic at Vine Automotive, said he saw a young man walking southbound on Vine Street towards the school carrying an object that appeared to be a rifle just after 8 a.m.

Welke said he thought nothing of it at first but circled back to double check.

After speaking to the crossing guard who also saw what appeared to be rifle, Welke informed the principal.

“I’m sure it was someone just walking through the school to (the apartment buildings on Ida Street), but you just never know, “he said.

Welke said he was hoping the object was a pellet gun.

Gavin said people should use a “common sense approach” when carrying objects that appear to be firearms and cover them up in public areas.

Brett Sweeney, communications officer for District School Board of Niagara, said the board is appreciative of the NRP’s quick and thorough response.

He also said the school would be sending home a note to parents to inform them of the incident and let them know there was no danger at any time.
