Fundraiser for dog retirement home

-

Think of it as a retirement home for older, small-breed dogs.

Christine Van Moorsel operates Angel’s Rest

Dog Sanctuary from her rural home in Niagaraon-the-Lake. She takes in older dogs so they can live out the remainder of their years in a home environment.

She has room for 10 small-breed dogs — pugs, chihuahuas, Shetland sheepdogs and other small pups — and she’s so far managed to pay for their care out of her own pocket. Think food, medication, vaccines and vet bills. She also has help from Huntington Animal Hospital in St. Catharines.

On Saturday, a fundraiser will be held to raise some money to support their care.

The event will be held at 1079 Queenston Rd., Niagara-on-the-Lake, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be face painting, a barbecue, games, penny sale and door prizes.

It’s also a chance to meet some of her furry residents.

Some of the dogs come to her from local animal shelters because they’re too old to be adoptable. They have lost their homes of a variety of reasons, including the death of their owner, or if their owner moves into a nursing home that does not allow animals.

Christine and Nick Van Moorsel ran Nick’s Truck Parts on Dunkirk Road for 25 years. She’d often bring her dogs to spend the day in the office. For more information, call Christine at 905-262-6585.
