Victory lane welcomes newcomer

Repeat visits to victory lane has become a matter of course for the karting program at Merrittvil­le Speedway this season.

On Tuesday night Lenny Wiley led a field of four across the finish line in the 20-lap Senior Fun Division feature for his first win of the season.

Ben Colavecchi­a’s victory in the main event in the Junior 1 Division already was his seventh only nine weeks into the season at the Thorold track.

Colavecchi­a also has one of the two victories in the Novice 1 and 2 Division. Fellow Junior 1 racer Wayne Swinson has the other.

Almost as dominating in their racing classes, with six wins each, are Nigel Pendykoski, in Junior 2; and Jaedon Lawson, Junior Restricted.

Dylan Culp rounded out the winners circle Tuesday night with his third checkered flag in Senior Animal.

Following are the top five finishers and heat winners from Week 9 of this season’s karting program:

Junior 1, 15 laps: 1. Ben Colavecchi­a; did not start, Wayne Swinson. Heat winners: Colavecchi­a, both heats.

Junior 2, 15 laps: 1. Nigel Pendykoski, 2. Owen Kaiser, 3. Hana Rothwell, 4. Cohen Corbett, 5. Trevor Evans. Heat winners: Evans, Corbett.

Junior restricted, 15 laps: 1. Jaedon Lawson, 2. Austin Nigh, 3. Colton Lane, 4. Jacob Mamo, 5. Zach Trotter. Heat winners: Lane, Lawson.

Senior Fun, 20 laps: 1. Lenny Wiley, 2. Jacob Broughton, 3. Lenny Comeau, 4. Dan Lavallee. Heat winners: Wiley, Comeau.

Senior Animal, 20 laps: 1. Dylan Culp, 2. Travis Majuery, 3. Devon Rayment. Heat winners: Majuery, both heats.

In the point standings, Colavecchi­a’s 360-224 lead over Swinson is the largest at the track. Gavin and Aiden Lavallee have amassed 216 and 214 points, respective­ly.

Majuery leads Culp by 80 points — 528-448 — in the race for Senior Animal track championsh­ip. Well back in third place is Rayment, 380 points.

Pendykoski, with 524; Corbett, 472; and Christoper, 460; are the front-runners in Junior 2, while Nigh, 494; Lawnson, 454; and Davis Grocott, 438; make up the top three in Junior Restricted.

Karting returns Tuesday, weather permitting. Pits open at 5:30 p.m. and the first race is set to go at 7 p.m.
