One person is dead and three people have been hospitalized after a three-vehicle collision on Mountain Road in Grimsby Monday afternoon.

Niagara Regional Police said one person involved in the collision was pronounced dead at the scene, after they responded to the crash at about 1:10 p.m.

Niagara Emergency Medical Services paramedics reported that two of the three patients taken to out-of-region hospitals had life-threatening injuries, including one transported by air ambulance.

Police closed Mountain Road to traffic between Kemp and Elm Tree roads as officers from the collision reconstruction unit investigated.

Grimsby Muffler and Brake owner Simon Saulnier said he was inside his 299 Mountain Rd. shop working when the nearby crash occurred. By the time he was aware of the collision, he said several people had already gathered to help.

Saulnier said serious collisions on that stretch of road have been too common in the past 28 years he’s been in business there.

“There’s just too much speed. It’s a wide-open stretch and they think they’re on the highway doing 120 or 140 (km/h). It’s all the time. We see accidents here a lot,” he said.

Officers are asking anyone who witnessed the crash to contact them at 905-688-4111 ext. 5500.
