Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Diodati says he is battling classical Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

In a statement released Monday morning, Diodati said tests confirmed the diagnosis on Friday. He has been in hospital for the past two weeks with pneumonia, during which time he also developed pericarditis, which is an inflammation of the lining surrounding the heart.

“I have been overwhelmed by people reaching out with their good wishes for a speedy recovery, and felt it important to provide an update on my condition,” said Diodati in his statement. He stressed his lymphoma is a “treatable illness” with nearly a 100 per cent cure rate.

“I have significantly improved since I was first admitted to the hospital and am growing stronger every day. I am very optimistic about my treatment and recovery plan, and have been receiving excellent care through the Niagara Health system.

“I am also grateful for the support of those providing my care, for my family, friends, the team at the mayor’s office and the good people of Niagara Falls.”

Diodati’s illness became public after he missed the July 10 council meeting, during which Coun. Vince Kerrio served as acting mayor.

It is still unclear whether Diodati will be able to attend the next council meeting, scheduled for Aug. 14, the final one before the Oct. 22 municipal election.

“I’m eager to return to my duties as mayor of the city I love, and I fully intend to run for reelection this fall,” he said.

“I really appreciate all the prayers and well wishes, but I won’t be receiving visitors as I focus on a full recovery.”
