YMCA Niagara takes classes outdoors

With sunshine and blue skies outside, it can be a challenge for even the most dedicated gym rat to head inside for a workout during the summer months.

Knowing this, YMCA Niagara has opted to bring some of its fitness classes outdoors this summer by offering a series of free community classes in St. Catharines.

“We know the summer is a tough season at fitness facilities, so we’re trying to use as much outdoor spaces as we can,” said Samantha Cameron, regional specialist health and fitness with YMCA Niagara.

By opening the classes up to the public, not just current YMCA members, and making them free, Cameron said it’s also an opportunity for them to reach potential new customers.

“We’ve been posting about it on social media and trying to spread the word that this is an opportunity for people to come out and see what classes are like.”

There are three different classes being offered, on a weekly basis, through to Sept. 6. On Wednesday mornings, an outdoor boot camp class is held 9:15 to 10 at John Page Park on Scott Street.

Wednesday evenings, from 6:30 to 7:30, there is an outdoor family Zumba class held in Lakeside Park. On Thursdays, a yoga class takes place on the front lawn of St. Catharines city hall from 7:15 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The classes launched July 4. Cameron said the turnout has been great so far. Even during the recent heat wave, there were at least 25 people turning up to each class.

“The classes have been a huge success,” she said. “Everyone has been super excited and most of the people coming out aren’t currently members of the YMCA.”

The outdoor classes, she said, provide a glimpse into programming offered at the YMCA Niagara on a regular basis.
