NOTL council to get new faces

There’s no shortage of interestin­g storylines to watch in Niagara-on-the-Lake’s municipal election.

Among the candidates, current regional councillor and former lord mayor Gary Burroughs will be making a bid to rejoin town council.

Another former regional councillor, Dave Lepp, is vying to regain a seat at the Niagara Region horseshoe.

Also at the Region, Chuck McShane, who ran unsuccessf­ully in this past June’s provincial election for the Progressiv­e Conservati­ves, is vying to be NOTL’s directly elected representa­tive at the uppertier municipal government. Rounding out the field in the regional race are realtor Gary Zalepa Jr. and Mark Cherney, who is the business manager for IBEW Local 303.

Lord Mayor Patrick Darte, who is hoping for a second term as Niagara-on-the-Lake’s leader, faces challenges from current councillor Betty Disero and political newcomer Daniel Turner.

In the race for town council, with only four of eight current members — Martin Mazza, John Wiens, Terry Flynn and Paolo Miele — hoping to return, there will be a number of new faces at town hall next term.

A number of other hopefuls include Lauren Goettler, Ann Kurtz-Just, Rob MacInnis, Crispin Bottomley, Gus Koroneos, Simon Bentall, Mark Brown, Andrew Niven, Dennis Dick, Erwin Wiens, Wendy Cheropita, Allan Bisback, Norm Arsenault, Jordon Williams, Bernhard Peters, Stuart McCormack, Terry Davis, Katherine Reid, Clare Cameron and Sandra O’Connor.

Vying for the local Ditsrict School Board of Niagara trustee spot are Josephine Jenny Flores (Niagara Falls), Helga Campbell (Niagara Falls), Alex Bradnam (St. Catharines), Jennifer Ajandi (St. Catharines), David Waddington (St. Catharines), Sumeth Tanyaovala­ksna (St. Catharines), Roberto Contreras (St. Catharines) and A. Lora Campbell (St. Catharines).

Running for Niagara Catholic District School Board trustee are Shonna Daly (St. Catharines), Jeremy Anthony Harb (St. Catharines), Kathy Burtnik (St. Catharines), Dana Caroline Bayley (St. Catharines), Patricia Vernal (Thorold), Rhianon Burkholder (Thorold), Frank Fera (Niagara Falls), Dan Moody (Niagara Falls), Eddie Galati (Niagara Falls), John Shalala (Niagara Falls) and Tony Caruso (Niagara Falls).

Veronique Emery of Welland is the lone candidate for the French public school board and Melinda Chartrand of St. Catharines is the lone candidate for the French Catholic board.
