- MELINDA CHEEVERS

There will be some new faces around Thorold’s council chambers come October.

Friday was the deadline for candidate registration for the upcoming municipal election. There is a two-way race for mayor and both candidates will be familiar to voters. Current regional councillor and former mayor Henry D’Angela is seeking a return to the mayor’s seat. D’Angela will be facing off against current city councillor Terry Ugulini.

Mayor Ted Luciani is tossing his hat in the ring to run solely for regional councillor, joined in the race by city councillor Tim Whalen.

There are 18 people vying for the eight seats on Thorold city council. Incumbent candidates include David (Jim) Handley, Anthony Longo, Fred Neale and Sergio Paone. Rounding out the ballot will be Jean D’Amelio Swyer, Nella Dekker (D’Epiro), Carmen Derose, Jamie Drummond, Len Ferry, John Kenny, Norbert Preiner, Ken Sentance, Sebastian Soccio-Marandola, James Symons, Victoria Wilson, Mervin Wrighton and Chris

York.

For the English public school board there are three local candidates: Nancy Beamer, Mike Brousseau, Dale Anne Robinson. For the Niagara Catholic board, there are two candidates: Rhianon Burkholder and Patricia Vernal. There is one candidate each for the two French boards, Veronique Emery for the public board and Melinda Chartrand for the Catholic board.

Voters will head to the polls on Oct. 22, with voter notification cards expected to be mailed in late September. To ensure they’re on the list, voters can visit voterlookup.ca.
