Some of the best anglers to hit the water in Port Colborne

- MIKE ZETTEL

Upwards of 100 teams will be hitting the water in Gravely Bay this weekend as they ‘angle’ for the top prize.

Back for its second year, the Berkley B1 Championship Tour comes to Port Colborne Friday and Saturday, with some of the top anglers from across the province and beyond fishing for $75,000 in cash and prizes.

The city is the middle of three stops on the tour, with the first being Belleville on the Bay of Quinte and the last being Valleyfield, Que., on Lake St.-Francis, where the tour began 10 years ago.

Tour president Ben Woo said when it came time to expand the tour a survey of participants had Port Colborne right at the top of the list — not surprising as the city was named Canada’s Ultimate Fishing Town.

He said that with its natural features and the amenities of the park and the marina, Port Colborne is the best location to host a fishing tournament.

“It’s world-class, second to none,” Woo said.

After last year’s high water levels, the lake is back to normal this year, Woo said, adding the city is perfectly situated on Lake Erie to match the bass migration.

He said that while some tournaments are larger, Berkley has the benefit of attracting some of the most seasoned anglers.

“What we’re showcasing is the best of the best,” he said.
