Body found in car in underbrush near QEW
Police say death in Grimsby was ‘collision related’
Human remains have been found inside a vehicle off the roadway at the side of the QEW in Grimsby, the OPP have confirmed.
At about 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, the OPP were called to the QEW Toronto-bound, between Bartlett Avenue and Christie Street, said Const. Rob Knight of the Niagara detachment of the OPP. Both the Crime Unit and the Technical Collision and Investigation team were also dispatched to investigate the scene.
Police were called when a resident saw what looked like part of vehicle in the underbrush from their window, said Knight. The OPP discovered a body on the driver’s side of a vehicle, said Knight.
The vehicle was found in thick brush between the highway and a residential area, and police have not
yet determined how long it had been sitting there.
“The area that it was found in, there’s a lot of heavy undergrowth and there is residences behind it but there’s also a large berm for sound barrier, so it’s actually very difficult to see from the highway and the tree was on top of the vehicle making it even more difficult to see,” Knight said.
Knight said the incident was collision related and the investigation was working to determine when that happened and how and why the vehicle left the highway.
The OPP did not confirm the sex or identity of the victim in time for publication but did determine who was in the vehicle. Knight said they were notifying the next of kin, and that more information would be forthcoming once the family has been notified.
During the investigation, the TO-bound on-ramp was closed at Bartlett Avenue as was the right lane of the Toronto-bound highway
Knight said the highway would likely re-open by Thursday evening.
