Paul Brandt playing Meridian Centre in February

- JOHN LAW

A day after Meridian Centre announced some hard rock heading its way with Stone Temple Pilots and Seether, it has added a slate of Canadian country stars to the schedule.

Paul Brandt, Jess Moskaluke, High Valley and The Hunter Brothers will play the St. Catharines venue Feb. 22 as part of The Journey Tour. It gathers one of Canada’s biggest country singers ever along with three acts on the rise.

The tour coincides with Brandt’s new EP, “The Journey BNA: Vol. 2,” being released Nov. 9.

With dozens of awards, including seven Junos, Brandt is the most decorated Canadian country artist in history. Last year he was inducted into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame.

Moskaluke and High Valley have both played the Niagara Falls New Year’s Eve show in recent years. The Hunter Brothers made their mark recently with the country hit “Those

Were the Nights.”

Previous country shows at Meridian Centre have included Johnny Reid (twice), Old Dominion and Dallas Smith.

“We are super excited to get another country show at the Meridian Centre,” says director of marketing Kay Meilleur. “This is the first time for Brandt and we are thrilled, country does really well for us.”

With capacity for about 6,000 people for concerts, Meridian Centre will soon find itself competing for acts with a new 5,000seat theatre opening in Niagara Falls next year.

Meilleur says Meridian Centre has built a track record which keeps promoters coming back.

“We have concentrated on the details, responding to the needs and wants of the promoters, the artists and the fans. This approach has translated into an increase in concerts and events year after year.”

She adds that two venues of similar size can only benefit the concertgoers of Niagara.

Tickets for Brandt range from $38.50 to $99.50 (plus fees), on sale Saturday, 10 a.m., at www.ticketmaster.ca or by phone at 1-855-985-5000. On sale at Meridian Centre Monday, Sept. 10, at noon. Artist pre-sale begins today at 10 a.m.
