Falcons clipped by Kilty B’s on the road

The St. Catharines Falcons had trouble finding the back of the net in the late going Monday night when they opened their season series against the Hamilton Kilty B’s. After scoring twice in the first period, with both goals coming from Carson Edwardson, the Falcons were shut out the rest of the way in a Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League Golden Horseshoe Conference played at Dave Andreychuk Mountain Arena in Hamilton.

The 4-2 loss dropped St. Catharines to 1-3 while the rebranded Ancaster Avalanche won their fourth in a row after losing their season opener.

T.J. Hughes scored Hamilton’s only even-strength goal in the win. Luke Coucher’s shorthande­d marker opened the scoring 51 seconds into the game, while Anthony Pinelli added a powerplay goal in the second period and Mason Reeves scored into an empty net with 14 seconds remaining in regulation.

The Kilty B’s were outshot 34-29, including by a 14-7 margin in the third period, as Hamilton Bulldogs prospect Mario Costantini lowered his goals-against average to 1.68 while improving his save percentage to .944.

The Bulldogs selected the 16year-old from Stoney Creek in the fifth round, 95th overall, in this year’s Ontario Hockey League draft.

Dillon Lamarche took the loss in net for the Falcons.

St. Catharines went 0-for-6 on the power play; Hamilton, 1-for-6.

The Falcons are back on the ice Friday for a 7 p.m. puck drop against the Welland Jr. Canadians, 2-2, at Jack Gatecliff Arena. Hamilton visits the Fort Erie Meteors the following day starting at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday action in the Golden Horseshoe Conference has the Niagara Falls Canucks, 4-0; visiting the Lockport Regals, 0-5.
