Brock women undefeated in women’s rugby

Brock defeated Trent 58-17 on the road to end the women’s university rugby season undefeated.

Scoring for the Badgers, who ended league play with a 4-0 and will open the playoffs against York, 1-3, were team captain Katelyn Heyens, with four trys; Jenna Rainville, Niamh Haughy, two trys each; Miia Sorra, Breanna Jeremiah, one try apiece; Meagan Hart, three converts; Taylour Hurd, one convert.

“To see how far some of these student-athletes have come in three, four years is truly something,” head coach Stefanie Pavlovich said.

“This moment is the result of hard work, commitment, challenges, failures, and trust the path of building a program.”

Brock dropped a 60-12 decision to Trent falling to 1-4 in men’s rugby.

Field lacrosse

Kurtis Woodland and Campbell Park each scored four goals to send visiting Brock past Laurentian 18-7 in men’s university field lacrosse.

Tyrus Rehanek, Saul van der Zalm, Connor Aquanno, with two; Boedy Shield, Alex Pace,

Sam Leclair and Grayson Houghton also scored as the Badgers won for the second time in as many days.

Connor Brown, four goals; Connor Ham, Woodland, three apiece; Leclair, Rehanek, two each; Aidan Buis, Adam Kirchmayer, Mackenzie Mitchell, Blair Pachereva, Houghton

and Parker provided the offence in a 20-9 victory over Toronto, also on the road.

Brock, 4-1, hosts Laurentian, 1-5, Saturday, Oct. 13, beginning at 7 p.m.

The host Badgers lost 6-5 to McMaster and 20-8 to Wilfrid Laurier at a five-team Ontario University Athletics women’s

lacrosse festival played at Brock.

Softball

Brock swept visiting Windsor to qualify for the Ontario Intercolle­giate Women’s Fastpitch Associatio­n championsh­ips taking place Oct. 13-14 in Ottawa.

Badgers senior shortstop Madi Clinton celebrated her last home game by going 3-for-5 and driving in two runs in a 17-0 victory in the second game of Sunday’s doublehead­er at Lancaster Park in St. Catharines.

Brock bounced back from a pair of losses to Western with an 11-4, mercy-rule win in the top half of the twin bill versus Windsor.

Rachel Nevans recorded three RBIs, including a walk-off double over the Windsor centre fielder’s head to score three runs and end it on a mercy rule.

Pitcher Katie Oberle struck out four over six innings.

Soccer

Brock goalkeeper Marilena Spagnolo made seven saves backstoppi­ng the host Badgers to a scoreless tie against the top-ranked women’s university soccer team in Canada, the Guelph Gryphons.

Guelph outshot Brock 15-4 in the first of back-to-back weekend games for the Badgers.

Brock lost 2-0 to the York Lions the following day in Toronto.

Brock, 2-5-4, hosts the Algoma Thunderbir­ds, 0-9-1, Saturday, Oct. 13, 1 p.m., and at noon the next day.

The Badgers lost 2-0 to Guelph and 2-1 to York to fall to 3-7-1 in men’s soccer.

Leonardo Giron found the back of the net for Brock in the loss to the Lions.

The Badgers outshot Guelph 9-8.

Brock is back on the pitch Saturday hosting McMaster, 5-3-3, in a 3:15 p.m. kickoff at Alumni Field.

Hockey

Emma Balazsi, Jensen Murphy and Julia Pettella all saw action between the pipes as Brock went 2-1 in women’s university hockey at the annual Kincardine Pre-season Tournament.

After defeating Lethridge 2-1 in overtime and York 6-1 in regulation, the Badgers closed out the tuneup for the regular season with a 4-3 overtime loss to Regina.

“All three goalies were excellent,” head coach Margot Page said.

“We have really good team speed and a balanced lineup.”

Cross country

Lucas Salazer-Reid, captain of the Brock men’s cross country team, finished 10th overall at the Don Mills Open in Waterloo on Saturday.

He posted a time of 27 minutes and seven seconds, which was a minute back from the leader.

Paulina Sergnese placed eighth in the women’s race, 23:08.21; and was only 58 seconds back from first place.

“I asked most of the athletes to step outside their comfort zone and really push themselves, and virtually everyone did just that,” head coach Emily Allan said.

Badger Briefs: Brock wrestling coach Marty Calder received the Canadian Commonweat­h Sports Coach Award in recognitio­n of outstandin­g performanc­e coaching a team or an individual … Adam Graham of the men’s golf team carded rounds of 66 and 74, one stroke behind the winner, and came home from the Waterloo Invitation­al with a silver medal … Brock won the bronze medal in men’s golf at the McMaster Invitation­al Sept. 27 at Heron Point.
