Panthers extend win streak to five games

Five- and 10-game winning streaks were on the line when the Pelham Panthers hosted the Niagara Falls Canucks in Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League action Sunday.

Pelham came into the matinee at the new Meridian Community Centre in Fonthill hoping to win its sixth in a row and for the second time in less than 24 hours.

Thomas Young scored two goals, Noah Caperchion­e and Adam Scholz one each as the Panthers doubled the Meteors 4-2 the night before in Fort Erie in improve to 9-2.

Marco Lariccia and Luca Mazzo replied for the Meteors, 1-90-1.

Niagara Falls was seeking to extend to improve to a leaguebest 11-0 and tame the Panthers for the second time this season. Head-to-head play opened Sept. 28 at Gale Centre with a 5-4 Canucks victory.

Friday in Niagara Falls, Dillon Hill enjoyed a six-point night, Ben Evans and Justin Kyle collected five points each, and the Canucks defeated the visiting Lockport Regals.

Evans, with three; Matthew Maidens and Kyle, two apiece; had multiple-goal games, while Andrew Bruno, Ryan Donovan, Garrett Downie, Mitch Mendonca, Justin Randhawa and Hill also found the back of the net for Niagara Falls in the 13-2 victory.

Hunter Litman and Todd Smith each netted a goal for the Regals, 1-9.

Niagara Falls visits the Hamilton Kilty B’s, 8-2, for a 7 p.m. faceoff Monday at Dave Andreychuc­k Mountain Arena. Next action for the Panthers is 7 p.m. Friday versus the St. Catharines Falcons at Jack Gatecliff Arena.

At St. Catharines, two emptynet goals in a little more than a minute insured that the hosts improved their record to 5-3 and ended Hamilton’s winning streak at eight.

Tanner Brown’s goal for St. Catharines 4:04 into the second period was the only one scored with the teams at even strength.

Noah Solinger, power play; Jacob Roach, shorthande­d; Carson Edwardson and Adam Pys, extra attacker; rounded out the scoring for the Falcons. T.J. Hughes and Eric Mondoux scored power-play goals for the Kilty B’s.

Lone Golden Horseshoe Conference game on Sunday night’s junior B schedule had the Falcons at the 2-7 Welland Jr. Canadians.
