Welland moves into sixth place

RiverHawks win third game in a row

Matt Baumann netted two goals and Alex Vendette made 42 saves helping the Welland Jr. Canadians to a 5-2 victory over the Fort Erie Meteors.

Jason Horvat, Jarett Olbruck and Jacob Thomason also scored for the Jr. Canadians in Sunday night’s Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League game at Welland Arena.

Welland held on to win its second in a row and third in four games after jumping out to a 3-0 lead.

Evan Miller and Drew Passero replied with power-play goals for the Meteors who were seeking their second win in as many nights.

Fort Erie outshot Welland 44-34 and finished the game 2-for-7 on the power play. The Jr. Canadians went 0-for-3 with a man advantage.

Welland improved to 5-10 with the whistle-to-whistle win and leapfrogge­d over the 4-11-0-1 Meteors to move into sixth place in the nine-team Golden Horseshoe Conference.

Both teams were coming off wins, with the Jr. Canadians the more rested of the two junior B squads.

Fort Erie edged the Niagara Falls Canucks 5-4 in double overtime Saturday night. Welland was playing for the first time since defeating the Pelham Panthers 4-3 in overtime the previous Sunday.

Monday night action has the Jr. Canadians visiting the Hamilton Kilty B’s, 12-4. Next game for the Meteors is 7:15 p.m. Saturday, when they host the St. Catharines Falcons.

RiverHawks 5, Sailors 4 OT

At Port Dover, Daniel Volpatti’s goal 4:02 into the first overtime in Provincial Junior Hockey League action Sunday gave visiting Niagara its fourth consecutiv­e victory.

Also scoring for the RiverHawks, who improved their record to 10-6, were Josh Urbshott, Karl Lavoie, Tyler Seguin and Nick Volpatti.

Ethan Smith,

Isaac MacAulay, Todd Ainsworth and Matt Scanlin found the back of the net for the Sailors, 6-82-3.

Port Dover outshot Niagara 40-27.

The RiverHawks were 0-for-4 on the power play; the Sailors, 1-for-4.

Niagara’s next game is 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Gale Centre against the visiting Hagersvill­e Hawks, 8-5-1-2.
