R’Hawks lose second in a row

-

The Dunnville Mudcats were the ones that got away when the Niagara RiverHawks went fishing.

Niagara lost its second in a row dropping a 5-2 decision despite outshooting host Dunnville 45-35 in Friday night Provincial Junior Hockey League action.

Daniel Volpatti and Carter LeRoux netted goals for the RiverHawks, 10-8.

Ethan Garbutt, Matt Dolan, Noah Czyzewski, Hart Cargo and Mason Ash scored the Mudcats, who improved their record to 3-10-1-2 in the junior C league’s South Bloomfield Division.

Each team went 0-for-2 on the power play.

Eleven points separate lastplace Dunnville from fourthplace Niagara in the standings in the eight-team division, but the Mudcats are 2-1 versus the R’Hawks in head-to-head play this season.

Niagara’s next game is against the defending league finalist Glanbrook Rangers at home Thursday. Faceoff at Gale Centre in Niagara Falls is 7:30 p.m.

Peach Kings 8, Shamrocks 0

At Grimsby, Riley Maskell stopped 27 shots for his first shutout of the PJHL season as the host Peach Kings blanked Hespeler.

Friday’s win was the third in a row for Grimsby and the shutout of an opponent the second in as many nights. Riley Eberhardt backstopped the Peach Kings past the Hamilton Huskies Jr. Blues with a 33-save turn between the pipes in a 6-0 road victory the night before.

Second-place Grimsby improved to 15-2-1-0 thanks to goals from Ry Beattie, Addison DeTullio, two each; Jacob Balca, Maxime Pleau, Brennan Smith and Christian Stevens.

Their fourth loss in a row dropped seventh-place Hespeler to 3-13-0-1 before doubling the Port Dover Sailors 2-1 at home the following night.
