Falcons extend point streak to 14 games

The St. Catharines Falcons are showing no signs of touching down, much to the chagrin of their regional rivals in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Golden Horseshoe Conference.

Their fifth win in a row – and 13th in 14 games – was achieved in convincing fashion Sunday night in Welland.

Former Erie Otter Christian Girhiny found the back of the net twice, once on the power play, and added an assist as St. Catharines topped the Jr. Canadians

4-1.

Carson Edwardson and Tanner Main each netted a power play goal to round out scoring for the Falcons.

St. Catharines, which outshot Welland 53-14, jumped out to a four-goal lead before Michael Arch put the Jr. Canadians on the scoreboard with 6:41 remaining in the third period.

Dillon Lamarche earned the victory in net for the Falcons,

15-3-0-1.

Alex Vendette was tagged with the loss for Welland, which loss its fifth in a row to fall to 5-14-0-1.

St. Catharines finished the game 3-for-5 on the power play; the Jr. Canadians, 0-for-4.

Action in the battle for Highway 406 bragging rights shifts to Jack Gatecliff Arena in St. Catharines for a 7 p.m. faceoff Friday.

Canucks 6, Panthers 2

Zach Moore, Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League Golden Horseshoe Conference goaltender of the month for October, is on his way to having a good November as well.

On Sunday, the 20-year-old St. Catharines native made 25 saves backstoppi­ng visiting Niagara Falls past Pelham.

Moore lowered his goalsagain­st average to 2.22 and increased his save percentage to .933 with a whistle-to-whistle win that improved the Canucks to 3-1 versus the Panthers and to 18-20-1 overall.

Niagara Falls has now won four in row since snapping a two-game losing streak.

Pelham fell to 13-8-0-1 after being outshot 45-27 before an announced crowd of 427 at the new Meridian Community Centre in Fonthill.

David D’Agostino scored two goals, Dillon Hill, Mitch Mendonca, Matthew Riva, Alec Vent one each for Niagara Falls.

Dylan Biggar and Noah Caperchion­e replied Pelham which was seeking its third win in a row.

The Canucks finished 1-for-3 with a man advantage; Pelham, 0-for-5.

A home-and-home series in the junior B rivalry wraps up 7 p.m. Friday at Gale Centre in Niagara Falls.

Monday night action has the Hamilton Kilty B’s, 13-6; hosting the Fort Erie Meteors, 4-14-0-1.

Huskies Jr. Blues 4, RiverHawks 3 OT

In Provincial Junior Hockey League action at Hamilton, three unanswered goals, including Aidan Robitaille’s game-winner 2:31 into the first overtime, gave the hosts a come-from-behind victory over Niagara.

The rebranded Dundas Blues also got scoring from Jamieson Buck, Brady Bannon, Stephen Bell as they won their fourth in a row to improve to 9-10-1.

Nick Volpatti, Daniel Volpatti and Josh Urbshott replied for the RiverHawks, 10-8-0-2.

Hamilton outshot Niagara 38-29 and finished Sunday night’s game 1-for-5 on the power play. The RiverHawks went 0-for-8 with a man advantage as they extended their winless streak to four games. Niagara hosts the Hagersvill­e Hawks, 9-7-1-2; Thursday in a 7:30 p.m. faceoff at Gale Centre in Niagara Falls.
