$40M manufacturing facility coming to St. Catharines
Steelcon Fabrication Inc. has announced plans for a $40-million manufacturing facility for St. Catharines that will create up to 100 jobs.
The Brampton-based, familyowned company will produce its SIN Beam product for the North American market from 87 Grantham Ave. The product is a lighter steel construction beam created through advanced engineering design and a robotic fabrication process.
News of the investment came from Mayor Walter Sendzik’s office late Monday afternoon.
“This announcement is exciting not just because of Steelcon’s investment, but also because of the industry-leading technology that the SIN Beam brings to the North American market,” Sendzik said in a statement. “We look forward to working together to open the facility and advancing the future of manufacturing right here in St. Catharines.”
The company said it selected St. Catharines from several sites across North America, with insight from the city, federal, provincial and regional representatives and support from Colliers Niagara, Niagara College and Niagara Industrial Association.
The Grantham Avenue location was chosen after working with the city’s economic development team and local elected officials. It’s part of Steelcon’s expansion plan aimed at increasing its daily production of SIN Beams, improving production and energy efficiency and expanding its market reach in North America.
The company has installed a new robotic beam processor and said it’s on schedule to install a robotic beam assembler.
The total facility investment and improvements is estimated at $40 million. The city said the company will create up to 100 new high-skilled jobs.
“Steelcon’s investment underlines why manufacturing continues to play a crucial role in our economy,” said city economic development director Brian York. “It touches several of our longterm strategic goals of being a dynamic, innovative and sustainable city, while growing our economy in one of our key strategic sectors.”
