-

Niagara Health Foundation has received a portion of the $1.15 million raised at this year’s Rankin Cancer Run.

In May, more than 14,000 people participated in the 13th annual event.

The foundation was recently presented with $800,000 of the funds raised, which will be used to support cancer care at Niagara Health.

Walker Family Cancer Centre received $600,000 and Niagara Health sites in Niagara Falls, Welland, Port Colborne, and Fort Erie were each provided $50,000 from run proceeds.

Wellspring Niagara will benefit from $200,000, and Hotel Dieu Shaver Hospital will be supported with $100,000.

West Lincoln Memorial Hospital in Grimsby will also benefit from $50,000 raised through the event.

In 13 years, the run has brought in $8.7 million for cancer services in the region, with nearly $5.7 million benefiting programs at Niagara Health sites.

“Funds raised at the Rankin Cancer Run are integral to the work being done here at Niagara Health,” said Roger Ali, president and chief executive officer of Niagara Health Foundation.

Throughout the run’s history, critical patient care equipment including vital signs monitors, ultrasounds, beds, treatment chairs and upgrades to vital technology have been funded.

“The impact of the event on local health care through the years has been truly awe-inspiring,” said Ali in a news release.

Niagara Health president Dr. Suzanne Johnston said she is grateful for the funds generated by the annual event.

“We applaud everyone involved for the Rankin Cancer Run’s extraordinary success and the difference it is making in the lives of our patients,” she said.
