Best ’Shoe forward
Ontario junior B hockey’s crystal ball sees the future on display in St. Catharines today and in Fort Erie tomorrow.
A Golden Horseshoe Conference-high four players will represent the St. Catharines Falcons in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League Tops Prospects Game later this month.
Four players from the Fort Erie Meteors, also the most from the conference, will be showcasing their skills in the Future Prospects Game that opens an all-star doubleheader Thursday, Dec. 27, at Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex in Waterloo.
Top prospects are
17- and 18-yearolds, while only 16-year-olds are chosen to play in the future prospects game.
Goaltender Jack McGovern and Falcons teammates Jaleel Adams, Jacob Roach, forwards; Tanner Main, defence; will be playing on a team coached by Leamington Flyers head coach Cam Crowder.
Other Golden Horseshoe players on Team Crowder are Luke Croucher, T.J. Hughes, forwards; Derek Raposo, defence, all from the Hamilton Kilty B’s.
Team Clubb, coached by Waterloo Siskins assistant Wade Clubb and their opposition at the
showcase, features seven players from the ’Shoe: Noah Caperchione, F, Pelham Panthers; Nick Gidney, D, Thorold Blackhawks; Luke MacLeod, F, Lockport Regals; Luca Marcellitti, D, Fort Erie; Justin Randhawa, F; Matthew Riva, F; Niagara Falls Canucks; Alex Vendette, G, Welland Jr. Canadians.
Meteors bench boss Ethan Moreau and Canucks ownerhead coach Frank Pietrangelo will be behind the bench in Waterloo matching lines in the Future Prospects Game.
Team Moreau includes Chase Clark, G, Lockport; Marco Costantini, G, Hamilton; Michael Craig, D, Thorold; Ethan Culp, F, Fort Erie; Mark Duarte, F, Hamilton; Chase Grsic, G, Fort Erie; Toby Rizzo, F, Fort Erie; Todd Smith, Lockport.
Aaron Chiarot, D, Welland; Owen Holmes, F, Niagara Falls; Dawson McKinney, F; Ethan Simms, F, St. Catharines; comprise the Golden Horseshoe contingent on Team Pietrangelo.
Admission to the doubleheader is $10 adults, $5 students.
All proceeds go the Frank Santarossa Scholarship Fund, which provides financial assistance to GOHL players furthering their education.
Established in 1988, the scholarship fund honours the memory of Santarossa, a young hockey player who suited up for the Kitchener Dutchmen and Cambridge Winter Hawks in the mid-1980s.
He was killed in a car accident in winter 1987.
