Showcase shines spotlight on girls hoops

Doubleheader pits north Niagara all-stars against the best from south Niagara

-

Forty of the top female high school basketball players in Niagara are getting together on the same court next week.

Scheduled to take place Wednesday at St. Catharines Collegiate, the 2018 Niagara Region Girls All-Star Game is actually a doubleheader.

Making up the first all-star, or Top 10, team are the top 10 players from the respective zones, with the next 10 — essentially, the second all-star team — competing in the Top 20 game.

Action in the showcase tips off at 7 p.m. with the Top 20 featuring players from Zone 4, North Niagara; competing against an allstar contingent from Zone, 3, South Niagara.

In the late game, starting at 8:15 p.m., it’s the top 10 players from the two zones taking the court.

Coaches were asked to nominate three players from their teams ranking them in order. Rosters were set by a selection committee based on the rankings.

Organizer Frank Keltos was pleased with the interest in this year’s showcase.

“We have 24 schools represented in the game, which is every school which had a senior

team this season which is amazing,” he said.
