Honeymoon Suite coming to convention centre

- JOHN LAW

As they approach the 40-year mark as a band, Niagara Falls’ favourite sons Honeymoon Suite will play a homecoming show in April.

The ’80s icons will perform at Scotiabank Convention Centre April 9 with Welland rockers Revive the Rose opening.

“It’s a big treat for us to welcome home a band that got its start here more than 35 years ago,” said convention centre president Noel Buckley.

Formed in 1981 and led by singer Johnnie Dee and guitarist Derry Grehan, the band broke big in 1984 with the hit “New Girl Now,” which went top 30 in Canada and also cracked the U.S. singles chart. The followup, 1985’s “The Big Prize,” included the Canadian hits “Feel It Again” and “What Does It Take.”

The band has released seven studio albums, but none since 2008’s “Clifton Hill.”

In 2011, they were inducted into the Niagara Falls Arts & Culture Wall of Fame.

Revive the Rose singer Andy Colonico is primed to open for the city’s most enduring band.

“We feel completely honoured to share the stage with such hometown legends,” he said. “We hope to carry the rock and roll flag that they still continue to this day hold up very high.

“We are very excited to deliver an energetic opening set for the audience, to show them that rock is still out there in Niagara.”

Revive the Rose will also open for Niagara’s My Son the Hurricane at Lee’s Palace in Toronto March 29.

Tickets for the convention centre show are $32 (plus fees and tax), on sale at www.fallsconventions.com, at the box office or by phone at 1888-997-6222.
