Time to highlight men’s health

-

With it being Movember, I thought this would be a great time and forum to share my thoughts.

While shopping at a popular drugstore, I’m constantly asked while checking out if I would like to donate to women’s issues, such as women’s mental health, women’s shelters, breast cancer research and so on.

On one occasion, I politely replied to the cashier, “Well, what about men’s health issues, are they not as important as women’s issues?” The cashier was speechless. This disappointed me, but unfortunately did not surprise me.

While shopping in the same drugstore in November, I noticed there were no charitable campaigns or advertising dedicated to Movember, which is seemingly the only dedicated and annual charitable campaign for men’s health.

The goal of Movember is to bring awareness to men’s health, mental health and suicide prevention. Coincidentally, that same day there was a donation bin located near the exit of the store with a sign that read Tampon Tuesdays.

Throughout my life, I have been surrounded with amazing, influential and respectable women such as my terrific wife, my mother, sister, mother-in-law, co-workers, etc.

The goal of this letter is not to diminish female-inspired health campaigns, but rather bring light to the void of meninspired health campaigns. In society, we are taught we are all equal and that we should be inclusive and tolerant with each other and I wholeheartedly believe this. I believe it’s time for society to show more support and care for men since life is a two-way street. Rich Duffy Niagara Falls
