‘Frozen falls’ inspires dinner event at Table Rock

- JOHN LAW THE NIAGARA FALLS REVIEW

It’s not the kind of frozen dinner you’re used to.

On Jan. 31, Table Rock House Restaurant at the brink of the Canadian Horseshoe Falls will offer its first Frozen Falls Dinner, based on the yearly winter spectacle of the falls becoming “encased in thick layers of snow and ice.”

Guests will start with an opening reception at the Table Rock Grand Hall, then move into the newly renovated restaurant for a five-course meal paired with Niagara VQA wine.

Along with the meal will be a presumably ice-covered Horseshoe Falls. But with recent temperatures unusually balmy, the only thing in deep freeze at Table Rock Jan. 31 might be the ice cream.

What to do if the Frozen Falls Dinner isn’t so frozen?

Niagara Parks Commission chief executive officer David Adames said refunds will be available, but he’s confident winter will work its magic in time for Jan. 31.

“We’ll keep regular communication going, but even if temperatures (don’t) drop, we’re going to get a certain amount of winter conditions down there that they can enjoy,” he said.

“When we get even partial ice, with the lights it looks really special.”

The ‘frozen falls’ has been used to describe past frigid winters in which it appeared the river had turned to ice. But — as the water continuing to flow over the edge might indicate — the rushing water of the falls can never completely freeze over. The ice boom on the upper Niagara River ensures that.

That didn’t stop international media from descending on the city in 2015, convinced the ice had taken over.

NBC declared “Exclusive drone footage captures frozen Niagara Falls.”

It takes weeks of frigid temperatures for ice to accumulate by the falls — something there is no sign of yet. But Adames said all it takes is one cold day for the mist to create dazzling ice effects along Niagara Parkway.

“It can happen very quickly,” he said.

Tickets for the dinner are $125 a person. Visit niagaraparks.com/dinner to view the menu and purchase.
