Note to Standard readers
For 129 years, the St. Catharines Standard has been keeping residents of this city informed and entertained, from in-depth local news, investigative reporting, business insights, lively opinion pieces and behind-thescenes sports coverage.
If it was happening in the Niagara Region, the St. Catharines Standard had it covered.
With St. Catharines Standard named a finalist for the Michener Award in 2019 and our Niagara Region news team winning scores of Ontario Newspaper Awards and National Newspaper Awards over the years, our journalism has been a major influence in the life and development of our community.
Our passion for change, tolerance and equality led to ground-breaking investigative reporting, including All The Chair’s Men series about hiring practices in the Niagara Region, which prompted an investigation by the Ontario Ombudsman’s office and led to wholesale electoral change in the 2018 Niagara municipal elections.
And for 129 years, the St. Catharines Standard has brought the stories of our community to life.
This includes critical analysis on key issues of the day across the Niagara region; insightful political reporting; thoughtful and provocative columns; and extensive coverage of the latest news and trends on education, housing, health, science, technology, business and personal finance as well as coverage of travel, sports, fashion and beauty, real estate, autos and much more.
In short, our journalism makes things happen. We inform, connect, investigate, report and fight for local concerns. We are extremely proud of that tradition.
We have counted on the passion, loyalty and support of you, our readers, to help fund our journalism. Like all news outlets in recent years, though, the St. Catharines Standard has been forced to deal with the economic challenges brought on by declining print advertising revenue and a continuing shift in our reader habits from the printed newspaper to digital and mobile devices, including smartphones, computers and tablets.
With that reality in mind, today we are introducing The Standard Digital Access, our digital subscription plan on stcatharinesstandard.ca.
It’s a major step that we hope you, our customers, will view as an investment in quality journalism and in the St. Catharines Standard’s ability to continue to provide the kind of top-quality, in-depth local and investigative reporting for which we are known and respected.
All visitors to stcatharinesstandard.ca will have complimentary access to a limited number of articles every 30 days before being asked to subscribe. If you are a home-delivery subscriber of the St. Catharines Standard, you will need to register on stcatharinesstandard.ca and verify your subscription to continue to have complimentary access to our bold and progressive journalism across all your devices.
Access to the St. Catharines Standard’s newsletters, letters to the editors and classifieds advertising will remain complimentary for all visitors.
