Welland should start plowing Merritt Island Trail in winter

-

Iwould like to suggest Welland revise its position regarding snow clearance on the Merritt Island Trail, especially between the parking lot and the Woodlawn Road bridge.

As I am sure city leaders are aware, there are a great many people, including families and seniors, using this pathway regularly for recreation and exercise.

With the onset of winter weather, unless the snow is cleared regularly just like city sidewalks, the trail can become icy and very hazardous when the snow is tramped down.

With the COVID-19 pandemic and frequent lockdowns, the availability of the Merritt Island Trail is an important diversion and resource for all Welland and, indeed, Niagara citizens.

For the safety of users and to avoid liability to the city, it seems logical the trail should be cleared of snow in winter. Surely, with the lack of work due to arena and other city facility closures, manpower could be re allocated for this purpose.

Closure of the trail is not an option, as I believe it would not only create a political firestorm, but also would be a disservice to the public.

Although I reside in Fonthill, I was a business taxpayer in Welland for 35 years when I operated Shoppers Drug Mart in Seaway Mall.

I, along with my spouse and many friends, are regular users of the Merritt Island Trail for walking, jogging and rollerblading.

I hope the City of Welland will reconsider this matter.
