Wainfleet man suffers serious injury after being struck by tree
A Wainfleet man suffered a serious head injury after bring struck by a tree in a woodlot west of Burnaby Road and was transported to an out-of-town hospital Wednesday afternoon.
Wainfleet Fire and Emergency Services, Niagara Emergency Medical Services and Niagara Regional Police all responded to the call just before 12:30 p.m. behind Kingswood Millwork and Design.
Niagara EMS acting superintendent of public relations and affairs Bryce Brunarski said three paramedic units were at the incident — the Wainfleet community response unit, a supervisor and ambulance.
The medical vehicles and Wainfleet fire service vehicles drove about 400 metres across a frozen farm field to reach the woodlot.
Fire Chief Morgan Alcock said when firefighters arrived on scene CPR was underway.
Alcock said the fire service’s Utility Terrain Vehicle was requested for access and possible transport and added a second man was in the woodlot.
An ATV and small trailer were near the woodlot not far from a trail used by firefighters and paramedics to reach the man.
“He was about 50 to 100 yards in (the woodlot). We ended up carrying the patient out and didn’t need the UTV,” Alcock said, adding there were five trucks and 10 firefighters at the afternoon incident.
Brunarski said paramedics stabilized the man on scene and an Ornge air ambulance was requested.
The helicopter landed in the frozen field and airlifted the man from the scene at 1:25 p.m. to an out-of-region hospital.
