Fry joins Shaw Festival’s Caroll for online theatre chat
Stephen Fry is coming back to the Shaw Festival Thursday. At least on the company’s Youtube page.
The 63-year-old British icon recently recorded an hour-long online conversation with Shaw artistic director Tim Carroll which will be uploaded to the festival’s Youtube channel at 7 p.m.
Afterwards, it will continue to be available for viewing under the “interviews” tab.
The chat will cover several topics, including the value of storytelling, and marks a reunion of sorts between the two friends who collaborated on a trilogy of shows called “Mythos” for the Shaw Festival’s 2018 season.
The shows had Fry sharing stories about Greek mythology, divided into three separate productions at the Festival Theatre: “Gods,” “Heroes” and “Men.”
Combined, the trilogy — directed by Carroll — was seven and a half hours of Fry alone on stage, simply talking to the audience with his trademark wit.
Carroll said more of the same is in store for the virtual conversation.
“Stephen is in typically dazzling form,” he said, “ranging across any and every subject with the incredible depth of knowledge, wit and humanity that have made him so widely loved.”
Best known for playing Lord Melchett in the BBC TV comedy “Blackadder,” Fry has appeared in dozens of films, including “Chariots of Fire,” “A Fish Called Wanda,” “Gosford Park” and Peter Jackson’s “The Hobbit” trilogy.
He’s also a prolific author, with the Shaw Festival production of “Mythos” based on his 2017 book “Mythos: A Retelling of the Myths of Ancient Greece.”
The Shaw Festival’s 2021 season features many productions from the cancelled 2020 season, including “Gypsy,” “Charley’s Aunt” and “Sherlock Holmes and the Raven’s Curse.” The first preview performance is scheduled for May 1. Tickets are available at www.shawfest.com.
