Daily number of new COVID cases is dropping

To date, there have been 8,469 confirmed cases of coronaviru­s in region

Niagara continued its downward trend with 24 new COVID-19 cases Saturday and 19 on Sunday, as reported by Niagara Region Public Health.

To date there have been 8,469 confirmed cases of the novel coronaviru­s in the region with 365 deaths and 7,834 cases resolved.

Provincewi­de, Ontario reported 2,315 new COVID-19 cases over the weekend. This brings the total number of cases to 293,086 since Jan. 15, 2020.

Niagara’s active cases Sunday numbered 270, a drop of 14 from Friday.

This weekend, outbreaks at Tufford Manor and Extendicar­e in St. Catharines, Lookout Ridge Retirement Community in Pelham and Maple Park Lodge in Fort Erie were declared over.

There remain 17 active outbreaks in the region.

The age groups of 20 to 39 and 40 to 59 outnumber all other age groups with 80 and 72 active cases respective­ly, public health reported.

Lincoln and Thorold have the highest number of COVID-19 cases per 10,000 population at 7.4 and 6.0, respective­ly, while West Lincoln and Port Colborne are lowest at 2.5 and 2.6, respective­ly.

Niagara Region remains in the province’s grey zone designatio­n, which means stores are

only allowed 25 per cent capacity, while supermarke­ts, convenienc­e stores and pharmacies are allowed to be at 50 per cent capacity.

Restaurant­s can provide takeout options only and other shops such as hair salons and gyms remain closed.
