Cupcake delivery is a salute to Niagara’s health-care workers

Niagara SPCA and Humane Society made some special deliveries for essential health-care workers Monday — National Cupcake Day.
Volunteer bakers delivered nearly 1,200 cupcakes to longterm-care homes and all local hospitals as a sweet salute to their efforts over the past year.
National Cupcake Day usually marks one of the humane society’s fundraising events, but executive director John Greer said it opted to change things up this year to recognize the sacrifices of essential workers since the pandemic began.
“Our animal-care staff has continued to work tirelessly to care for the animals in our care throughout this pandemic and we decided we would like to thank the like-minded people who give so much of themselves in times like this,” he said.
Treats were delivered by members of the humane society’s community engagement team, established during the pandemic to offer help to vulnerable pet owners, mainly with pet food.
As much of the province emerges from lockdown, the Ontario SPCA is encouraging people to enjoy their cupcakes at home and make an online donation to the animal organization of their choice at www.nationalcupcakeday.ca.
Niagara Falls magician Greg Frewin, recently appointed to the Niagara SPCA and Humane Society board, said baking for front-line workers is a “great community initiative.”
“My kitchen staff and some of my theatre employees also stepped up to bake 400 cupcakes for the front-line workers on Cupcake Day,” the magician said.
