A true “hockey dad” on and off the ice, Walter Gretzky was the embodiment of selfless sportsmanship and fatherly love. The Canadian hockey patriarch passed away Thursday night after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease and other health issues. He was 82.

Wayne Gretzky took to Twitter to pay tribute to his late father and mentor, writing, “For me, he was the reason I fell in love with hockey. He inspired me to be the best I could be not just in the game of hockey, but in life”.

Hockey fans at home and abroad shared their memories of the lovable hockey dad on social media, sharing photos and writing messages of condolences to the Gretzky family.

Bob Nicholson, Chairman of the Edmonton Oilers, released a statement on their

website Thursday night.

“On behalf of the Edmonton Oilers Hockey Club, I extend our deepest sympathies to the entire Gretzky family on the passing of Walter Gretzky.

“The fabric of our franchise has been woven by some of the most influential players, coaches and executives the game has known, and included in that too are the loved ones that make our team a family.”

Kevin Lowe, vice-chairman

of Oilers Entertainment Group, also released a statement.

“Each of us who had the pleasure of spending time with Walter were undoubtedly affected by his positive approach to life, family and hockey. As each of us grow older, the passing of those dear to us, whether they be teammates, siblings, coaches or parents, reminds us to live our lives in a way that honours their legacy while holding them in our hearts when they are no longer with us.”

Harnarayan Singh, host of Hockey Night Punjabi, shared a memory with the late Gretzky on Twitter early Friday morning.

“Had the great pleasure of meeting Walter Gretzky when I was young. Took this pic of my sis with him at a charity golf event & he autographed a card for me. Walter was so kind, gracious, and had time for everyone. 1 of the most beloved people & Canada’s hockey dad. He will be missed.”
