Five-year-old driving ATV hurt in collision with truck
A five-year-old boy was airlifted to hospital in Saskatoon with serious injuries after the ATV he was driving collided with a pickup truck in southwest Saskatchewan on Tuesday.
“The young fellow, he was seriously injured, he’s been in for surgery, I guess, but there’s nothing new to report on that,” Sgt. Curtis Little with the Leader RCMP said Wednesday.
The Leader RCMP was called to a grid road in the RM of Miry Creek near the town of Cabri at approximately 8 p.m. Tuesday for a report of the collision.
The boy was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision and was driving a mini-quad. The man driving the truck was not injured. Alcohol is not considered to have been a factor.
The road was closed for the evening during the investigation but has been reopened.
“We’re just hoping for the best for the family and for the young fellow there just like everybody else would be,” Little said.
Under the All Terrain Vehicles Act, there are specific laws relating to underage people operating ATVs.
The act states that people cannot operate an ATV if they’re under the age of 16 unless they are on their family’s land. However, if the person is at least 12 years old, they can drive elsewhere if they are accompanied by a licensed driver or have completed a training course.
The family of the boy declined to comment at this time.
