Stand up for Canadians

-

Calgary-based Husky, which is controlled by Hong Kong billionaire Li Ka-Shing, has apologized for the recent oil spill into the North Saskatchewan River.

When a foreign billionaire’s company dumps toxic crud into one of our rivers and cuts off the fresh water supply, are we supposed to accept this because we are polite Canadians?

Another issue that irks me about this is the City of Prince Albert saying it will fine residents $1,400 for using water unnecessarily. How about for every fine handed out to each resident, they forward the bill to Husky if the company really wants to make it right? Gutless politicians threaten their constituents with fines while foreign-run corporations roll all over our pristine country. What a sad day for Canada.

So far I haven’t heard any elected representatives going to bat for their constituents, only apologists and shills for the oil industry and international corporations trying to downplay this major inconvenience and environmental disaster.

International corporations will continue to test Canadians’ resolve and push us around while our government’s lack of oversight allows these companies free rein over our territory. If any individual citizen caused a disaster like this, the act would be considered criminal.

Our liberty to have access to a safe water supply and to enjoy our riverbanks and its wonderful beaches are under threat. We need a government that will stand up for Canadians and our sovereignty and not let international corporations defile our beautiful province. Nathan Holowaty, Saskatoon
