Investigation begins into oilpatch worker’s death

-

An investigation is underway into the work-related death of a 27-yearold man in the Alameda area.

Dustin Barry Pratt died in an oilfield accident on Monday.

“The entire Panther Drilling family is devastated by this tragedy,” Cory Hicks, president and chairman of the Weyburn-based company said in an issued statement.

“A wonderful young man lost his life,” he said. “Our thoughts and prayers right now are with his family,” he added, declining any further comment at this time.

The province’s Office of the Chief Coroner and Occupational Health and Safety are reviewing the circumstances of the accident. STARS Ambulance was dispatched to the Alameda area, about 60 kilometres east of Estevan, for an emergency Monday morning.

In a statement, the Coroner’s Office said there’s no indication of foul play. An autopsy has been ordered. Coroner’s investigations typically take four to six months. Pratt was a member of the Bienfait Coalers senior hockey team, part of the Big Six Hockey League in which many of the players work in the oilpatch. Tributes poured in to the Coalers’ social media accounts to remember No. 77.

“Won’t ever forget (Pratt), a good man gone too soon! Very fortunate to have shared a lot of laughs with such a genuine guy. Rest easy bud,” read one. “Straight up team player,” said another. He was also remembered by the Estevan lacrosse community, playing this season with the Senior Impact.

Pratt is survived by his parents, brothers, and a partner described as “the love of his life,” according to a published obituary. His funeral is set for Friday at St. John the Baptist Church in Estevan.
