Filmmaker loses drone

Local filmmaker Roger Maunder is looking for help finding a drone that got away from him during a shoot Wednesday evening.

Maunder was filming some shots of scenery around a pond off Logy Bay Road, near Robin Hood Bay Road, testing his new five-dayold Go-Pro camera on a drone.

A drone is an unmanned remote control mini aircraft, combined with small cameras to film aerial shots, and Maunder uses them often; last Christmas he flew one around the Basilica for a video with the Basilica Choir, capturing stunning footage high up in the sanctuary of areas never before seen.

Maunder was landing the drone Wednesday when it suddenly went haywire, diverting off to the side and out of sight. The drone's built-in GPS isn't picking it up.

Maunder suspects the signal to the device was interrupted by signals from satellite dishes at NTV, which is located in the area.

"It just took off," Maunder said. "My daughters were with me and we all went looking for it, but couldn't find it. Yesterday I went to some of the businesses in the area, but no one had picked it up. I'm thinking it might be in the marsh, or somebody's back yard.

"It's brutal, because I've been using the drone for everything."

Maunder says the drone and camera together are worth about $2,000, and he was planning to use it during filming of the upcoming reality TV show, "Entrepreneur NL," due to be aired on NTV early next year.

He's hoping anyone who finds it will return it to him, by calling him at 740-3456 or messaging him through his website, www.upskydownfilms.com.
