Busy day at Confederat­ion Cup tourney

Ryan O’Hearn scored twice to give the Lockview Dragons from Fall River, N.S. a 3-2 win over the Queen Elizabeth Pioneers in a Tier 1 game at the Confederat­ion Cup high school hockey tournament on Friday.

At Robert French Memorial Stadium in Kelligrews, Nick Scott had a single for the winners and Devin Shewan collected the victory in net.

Dylan Baird and Jeff Greenslade tallied for the Pioneers, whose goaltendin­g informatio­n was not available.

In other Tier 1 games, the Mount Pearl Huskies downed the Central King’s Gators, from Cambridge, N.S., 4-1 at Robert French, and the Ascension Astros doubled up the Waterford Valley Warriors 4-2 at the Paradise Double Ice Complex. Goal scorers and goaltender­s were not available for either contest.

In Tier 2 action, Aaron Peddle had a hat trick and Chris Kirkham provided shutout goaltendin­g as the Holy Spirit Falcons blanked the Exploits Valley Eagles 4-0 in Paradise. Tyler Wall had a single marker past the Eagles’ Matt Peyton.

The Eagles did collect a win Friday, defeating the Marystown Central Clippers 5-1 at Goulds Arena. Tyler Griffin led the way with two goals, and Chris Coole, Brandon Butt and Matt Antle chipped in with one apiece. Michael Pittman had the Clippers’ only tally.

Michael Hurdle outdueled James Brenton for the goaltendin­g win.

Also at Goulds Arena Friday, the Gander Concordes’ Paul Russell netted two in a 5-1 win over the PWC Cavaliers. Nick Matchim, Casey Hancock, and Alexander Hodder also scored for the winners. Ben Hopkins lit the lamp for the Cavs.

In net, it was Gordon Green with the win and Ben Jessome taking the loss.

The Laval Cavaliers and the Inverness Rebels, from Cape Breton, N.S., skated to a 4-4 tie at Twin Rinks. Jarrod Bohlke led the Cavaliers attack with a two-goal effort, while teammates Andrew Kelly and Kolton Green added singles. Iain Stewart supplied a hat trick for the Rebels, and Devon Whitty had the fourth goal.

Goaltender­s of record were William Neville for Laval and Ryan Miller for the Cape Breton squad.

Back in Paradise, Josh Williams also had a hat trick in the Crescent Coyotes 6-3 victory over the Corner Brook Titans. Dawson Sieben, Lyndon Thorne, and Alex Day also scored for the winners. The Titans goal-scorers were Nycolas Pappas, Chris Kelly, and Karli Gale.

Adam Marsh earned the win in Crescent’s blue ice, while Tyler Bursey took the loss.

In contests were game informatio­n was available, the Concordes defeated the Titans 2-1 at Twin Rinks, while at Goulds Arena, the Carbonear Sentinels edged the Stephenvil­le Spartans 3-1, the St. Kevin’s Mavericks routed Laval 71, and the Clippers clipped the Monarchs 5-1. At Robert French, the Tricentia Timberwolv­es were also 7-1 winners, beating the Spartans.

Not all results were available before the Telegram’s press deadline.

Eliminatio­n games are set for today, followed by quarter-final games in Tier 2 and semifinals in Tier 1. Tier 2 semifinals and both championsh­ip games take place Sunday.
