The federal government has announced funding to assist upgrades being made to Stella’s Circle building on Cabot Street in downtown St. John’s.

Seamus O’Regan, MP for St. John’s South-Mount Pearl, announced funding Tuesday of $32,500 for the project through the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program (CIP 150).

Stella’s Circle offers a range of housing, counselling and employment services to people facing challenges.

Through this project, Stella’a Circle plans to replace the roof of the east section of the Cabot Street building with a two-ply, modified roofing system to prevent permanent interior damage to the structure.

The CIP 150 program was announced in the federal budget as an additional $150 million over two years, bringing the total community infrastructure funding available to $300 million.

The program, delivered in Newfoundland and Labrador by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), supports projects to renovate, expand and improve spaces such as community centres, parks and arenas across Canada in celebration of Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation in 2017.

“I’m a big champion of Stella’s Circle. They are a valuable community partner, and this project will help improve a key piece of infrastructure that supports community capacity building and serves the entire region,” O’Reagan stated in a news release.

“Through CIP 150, the Government of Canada is committed to supporting projects like this one, which improve our communities by restoring and upgrading the facilities and areas that bring us together.”

“CIP 150 reminds us of the importance of the places in our communities that bring us together and make our communities stronger,” said Navdeep Bains, minister of innovation, science and economic development and minister responsible for ACOA.

“The Government of Canada’s support for upgrades to this Stella’s Circle building in St. John’s will help renovate and improve a place where people come together for much-needed support and services.”
