Kudos to N.L. on e-waste recycling
We all have old electronics kicking around that are beyond their useful life, such as old TVs and remotes, cameras and cables, computers and tablets and more. All of these end-of-life electronics (EOLE) can be safely and securely recycled and the recovered materials put back into the manufacturing of new products, which is exactly what Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are doing.
Newfoundlanders and Labradorians have recycled more than 2,500 metric tonnes of old and unwanted electronics since the Electronic Products Recycling Association (EPRA) Newfoundland and Labrador launched our program in 2013. In fact, over the last three years, we have collected and safely recycled over 2,500 metric tonnes of EOLE, that’s an estimate of 227,000 devices, diverting them from landfills and recovering materials including valuable resources such as gold and copper for use in other new products.
Recycling these electronic products keeps them out of landfills and keeps substances of concern out of our environment. Reusing recovered materials from old electronics reduces the need for traditional mining to extract minerals from the earth and results in less energy use to manufacture new products.
For context, the amount of electronics recycled in this province through EPRA Newfoundland and Labrador since 2013 is equivalent approximately to the weight of 69 humpback whales. We commend Newfoundlanders and Labradorians for their uptake in e-waste recycling and encourage continued recycling of your old electronics at one of our 52 drop-off locations around the province. More information on what can be recycled and your nearest drop-off location can be found on our website, recycleMYelectronics.ca/nl.
Thank you Newfoundland and Labrador for a successful three years and here’s to many more! Terry Greene Program Director EPRA Newfoundland and Labrador
