Jeeps are Korean War era

- Harry Pike St. John’s

In last week’s column we showed a fully restored Jeep, photographed in Winnipeg by Gary Hebbard of St. John’s. We identified the vehicle (top, right) as a World War II era Willys. One reader disagrees:

“Article in your column Saturday, September 17th., with picture is not correct. The Jeep picture shows a 1952 M38 Canadian Jeep assembled by Ford Motor Company, Windsor, Ontario for the Canadian Military.

“Attached picture (lower, right) is my 1951 M38 Jeep built by Willys Overland, Toledo, Ohio for the US Army . The Jeep pictured is Korean War era not WW 11.

Both Jeeps are Korean War era. Mr Hebbard’s Jeep picture shows body markings under driver’s door 52-31392 which is year and vehicle number. Yellow disc number 2 below windshield is weight category (1/4 ton), square decal is branch insignia. Both jeeps are the same but different armies.
