The Memorial Sea-Hawks men’s and women’s soccer teams faced some tough opponents in a road trip to Nova Scotia on the weekend.

The Memorial Sea-Hawks women’s soccer team suffered its first loss of the season over the weekend, and it came at the hands of the first-place University of Cape Breton Capers who remain unbeaten in AUS play

Chelsea Foote scored just after the start of the second half and that goal stood as the Capers came away with a 1-0 win Saturday in Sydney, N.S.

The loss bumped the SeaHawks from the unbeaten ranks in the Atlantic University Sport conference. Memorial, which entered the game as the 10th-ranked team in the country (Cape Breton was ranked eighth nationally), is 5-1 and in second place after picking up a 2-1 win over St. Francis Xavier X-Women Sunday.

It was the first loss of the season for St. FX (3-1-2).

The Sea-Hawks’ men’s squad wasn’t as fortunate, losing both its games over the weekend to fall to 1-3-2 on the year. Memorial lost 3-1 to second-place Cape Breton (4-1-1) and by the same score to first-place St. FX on Sunday.

Sunday in Antigonish, rookie Angela Torraville opened scoring for the Lady Hawks at 11 minutes, but the X-Women tied things up on a Kelsey Ellis goal at 50 minutes.

That meant Holly O’Neill was the hero for Memorial, getting the game-winner with three minutes left in regulation time.

For the men, Jordi Slaney scored the tying goal at 33 minutes Sunday at St. Francis Xavier, but Memorial saw the X-Men (4-0-2) score twice in the second half for a 3-1 win.

Saturday in Sydney, Tyler Forsey had Memorial’s only goal in the loss to the Capers.

Both Memorial soccer teams are off next weekend, and the following Thanksgiving weekend when the national Jubilee Trophy and Challenge Cup championships are scheduled in St. John’s.
