Leafs, Osprey up 3-2 in major midget semis

The St. John’s Maple Leafs and Tri-pen Osprey both carry 3-2 leads in their respective semifinals heading into next weekend in the Newfoundla­nd and Labrador Major Midget Hockey League. In Corner Brook, the Leafs led 2-0 entering play, but the homestandi­ng Kings came away with two wins in three games,

Sunday, the Kings won 8-6 on two goals and an assist from Adrian Ward and a goal and three helpers from Ryan Roche. Curtis Heffernan had two goals and two assists for the Leafs.

Saturday, the Leafs won 5-2 on two goals from Regan Seymour. Liam Smith had a goal and an assist Friday night in Western’s critical 4-2 victory.

At the Bay Arena in Bay Roberts over the weekend, the East Coast Blizzard — trailing the series 2-0 — came away with a pair of wins in three starts. The Osprey, however, took the series lead Sunday night with a 7-3 win on Liam Leonard’s two goals. Saturday, Drew Bennett netted two goals and assisted on another in a 4-3 Blizzard decision. Leonard had two in that one as well. The Blizzard avoided falling behind 3-0 with a big 7-6 decision Friday night on Michael Curran’s overtime goal. Jack Keough had two goals and two assists for the winners. Mark Barrett had three in a losing cause. The Leafs and Kings play Game 6 of their series 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Mount Pearl Glacier. If game 7 is needed, it goes 10 a.m. Sunday at the Glacier.

As for the Blizzard and Osprey, Game 6 is 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the Goulds Arena. A Game 7 would be played 10 a.m. Sunday in the Goulds.
