Highway chase leads to arrest of four in connection with shooting

Four people are in police custody following a shooting and vehicular pursuit after a man was shot in Avondale Friday evening.

About 6 p.m. Friday, Holyrood RCMP received a call of a shooting in Avondale

A 32-year-old man was found at the scene with a gunshot wound to his leg. He was taken to hospital and is in stable condition.

The shooting suspect fled the scene in a vehicle accompanie­d by three other people prior to police arrival. Attempts by police stop the vehicle a number of times were first unsuccessf­ul as it speeded along the TransCanad­a Highway.

Around 10 p.m., officers de- ployed a spike belt, which flattened the suspect vehicle’s tires. The driver attempted tried to continue but came to a stop near the Whitbourne turnoff. Two men, one women and a young offender, were taken into custody without incident.

The two men will remain in police custody to be brought before the provincial court. One is charged with aggravated as- sault, careless use of firearm, pointing a firearm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, driving while disqualifi­ed, breach of probation and four counts of breach of undertakin­g.

The second man is charged with accessory to the offence and breach of probation.

The woman and the young offender have both been charged with accessory to the offence and have been released.
