Former Zellers building on Stavanger getting new tenants
Plenty of developments underway in east end shopping district despite Costco’s departure
Costco may be ready to pull up stakes and head off to Galway, but that’s not stopping some businesses from putting down roots in the east end retail district.
Construction is underway inside the building once occupied by Zellers and Target on Stavanger drive, though the structure’s owner wasn’t able to release information as to who is setting up shop without clearing with them.
“Sometimes companies prefer to make their own announcements and they get very angry at their landlords if they spill the beans,” says Sheri Carver-robinson, Atlantic Provinces leasing director for Quebec-based Cominar REIT.
But whoever is moving in isn’t using all of its approximately 120,000 square feet.
“We had a couple of possibilities there that would have been tenants for the whole building. They didn’t pan out so we’ve made the decision that we’re going to bite the bullet and subdivide it,” says Carver-robinson, noting that 80,000 square feet are still available.
Construction on the façade is expected to take place over the summer.
There’s also significant development along the even numbered side east end of White Rose Drive, site of a Thompson Centres development.
Golf Town ceased its operations last fall, but it’s still home to a number of retail locations include Dollarama, Bulk Barn, and Party City among others.
One of the new retail spaces on the corner of White Rose and Aberdeen already features signage for the popular mainland restaurant chain Pizza Pizza, which will be the first of its kind in this province.
