The Anglia and other 60s vehicles

-

We have received a detailed email from Les Winsor describing the early 1960s Anglia. Les says he glanced at the Giant Mart photo (at right - sent in initially for our May 6th. column by Pat Walsh) and then went on to provide some extra info:

“I have attached a photo from 1962 that shows myself standing behind my 1942 Harley. My sister's 1960 Anglia is on the left.” (Robert Osmond is at left).

There’s a part-view in the photo (at right) of a Simca. Les explains:

“Another sister was visiting at the time from Quebec. They bought the Simca in France while serving in the RCAF. The Simca has a Ford 239 cubic-inch V8 flathead in it. The car was built in a Ford-owned plant. There was one other Simca V8 in St. John's that I can recall from that period and there were lots in Montreal.

Also at right is a photo from the Anglia Handbook of the car’s interior (see picture caption for details). The 1962 photo was taken on Road de Luxe currently where the access to St. Luke's Home is located.

Robert’s car, parked on the road (barely visible by the right-hand pole) is a c. 1960 Meteor.

I would think from checking out the license plates in the

Giant Mart photo the time period was 1960-62 or on the out side 1966? The 1960 plate was red, the 1962 was black and the 1964 was dark blue. The 1966 was an orange colour and maybe on the original photo

Come Home Year would show if it is 1966. Behind the Anglia in the Giant Mart photo is a 1959 Pontiac with a c.1960 Vauxhall (?) next to it. Next to the VW is a 1957 Pontiac. - take care, Les Winsor, Mount Pearl
