Science Team NL Excels at the 2017 Canada Wide Science Fair
Six students from the Husky Energy Eastern Newfoundland Science and Technology Fair represented the province at the Canada Wide Science Fair (CWSF) at the University of Regina in Sask. from May 14-21. The Eastern NL students included Nora Boone, Clara Phillips and Noha Shehata, all from Holy Heart as well as Nisarg Dave from Gonzaga, Kurtis Collins from Waterford Valley and Aaron Sarkar from Macdonald Drive Junior High.
All participants did a great job and represented our province with pride. Nora Boone won a gold medal (pluse $250), an Innovation Challenge award and a Youth Can Innovate award (pluse $1,000). Aaron Sarkar won a silver medal, while Kurtis Collins, Nisarg Dave and Noha Shehata each won a bronze medal. Project titles are available at: https://goo.gl/ja25js.
The national science competition is the largest of its kind in Canada. This year 448 junior and senior high students from across the country competed for numerous medals and prizes. Close to one million dollars in cash awards and scholarships were awarded to the country’s top young scientists. Gold, silver and bronze medals were given in each of 3 grade categories of junior (grades 7 and 8); intermediate (grades 9 and 10) and senior (grades 11 and 12). There was also one prize given for each grade category in each of seven challenges including resources, innovation, information, health, environment, energy and discovery. As well, there were numerous special awards including 16 from Youth Can Innovate. Entrance scholarships from five Canadian universities were also offered to medal winners. Although the team representing NL is small, especially compared to other provinces such as Ontario (150 students) or Nova Scotia (20 students) NL competitors usually do quite well at the national level. This year’s results are no exception. Congratulations to Science Team NL: “small but mighty”!
