Cluney to represent N.L. at National Skills Challenge

Provincial Developmen­t Team and Blomidon Golf Club member Joseph Cluney will have the thrill of a lifetime as he competes in the 2017 Future Links Driven by Acura, Nationals Skills Challenge taking place at Glen Abby Golf Club in Oakville, Ont., on July 22. This will mark the third year for the event in partnershi­p with the RBC Canadian Open.

Cluney was selected to compete in the event by placing fourth in the national skills competitio­n for boys ages 12 to 14 years. The national skills competitio­ns qualifying activities included driving, putting, chipping and iron play with players awarded points for the successful completion of a skill. Cluney will compete in his age group with three other players from eastern Canada that have achieved the highest scores through the skills challenge events.

The schedule of activities for the day will include registrati­on at Glenn Abby Golf Club, followed by a welcoming reception and presentati­on of gift packages. The players will then have the opportunit­y to warm-up at the driving range and competitio­n in the four skills will take place from 3-5 p.m. EST. At the conclusion of the competitio­n, players, parents, guests and sponsors will be treated to a BBQ and presentati­on of awards.

As part of the National Skills Challenge activities, the 24 young golfers from across the country will be treated to a number of events. On Sunday July 23 the players will participat­e in a Golf Canada Junior Open and play the back 9 at Glenn Abby. Players will be involved in a junior clinic hosted by members of Team Canada and a special clinic hosted by PGA Pro Bryson Dechambeau. Finally, the players will have the opportunit­y to “Walk with a Pro” to bring a conclusion to their experience.

Each attending participan­ts of the Future Links Junior Skills Challenge National Event will receive a performanc­e recognitio­n package valued at over $200 courtesy of Titleist. The winners of the national event in each age group for each gender will also receive a performanc­e recognitio­n package valued at $300 courtesy of Titleist.

The winners in the age group of 15-18 will also receive an exemption into one Future Links Championsh­ip in 2018.
